THIRD ALUMNI AWARD OF EXCELLENCE TO ROBERT CALNAN

UVIC School of Nursing Recognizes Nursing Week with Award

Rob Calnan is an ambassador for nursing. For his exceptional contributions Mr Calnan is the recipient of the 2009 University of Victoria School of Nursing Alumni Award presented at the UVic School of Nursing Alumni Lunch May15, 2009.  Mr Calnan, a graduate of the University of Victoria School of Nursing post-diploma BSN program, 1987, has contributed significantly not only to health care in Canada and abroad but also to the nursing profession. As President of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA), and Canada’s Representative to the International Council of Nursing (ICN), with others, Mr Calnan secured $5 million funding through CIDA for partnership work with 7 countries in South Africa for HIV/AIDS education and professional organization development, and secured another $8.9 million of funding through the Primary Health Care Transition Fund for the Canadian Nurse Practitioner Initiative. He is respected for his effectiveness in working with policy makers in health care, government, and with the public on behalf of the profession. Not only is Mr Calnan effective in grand areans, but when he presents on his work to student nurses his passion for nursing is contagious. Thus, Mr Calnan is an inspiration to nurses young and old, and to nurses across diverse settings. As a nurse valued by the media as spokesperson, Mr Calnan inspires public confidence in nursing Thus, we are delighted to celebrate the acomplishments of Mr Calnan, a dynamic, uplifting member of our Victoria nursing community.

National Nursing Week is held May11-17, 2009. During this week, nurses from across Canada celebrate the nursing profession, and nurses who have contributed significantly to nursing and who have through their efforts made a difference to the health of Canadians.

SECOND ALUMNI AWARD OF EXCELLENCE TO GERI HINTON

On May 15, 2008 the School of Nursing presented the second Alumni Award of Excellence to Geri Hinton. Marjorie MacDonald & Geri Hinton

Geri is a member of the third class of graduates from the University of Victoria School of Nursing. Since then she has contributed significantly to the health of seniors (and others) in British Columbia

As Executive Director of the Office for Seniors in the BC Ministry of Health, Geri was a field guide for many of our students in Nursing 351 (Community Health Promotion) and Nursing 431 (Nurses Influencing Change). She was deeply committed to the education of our nursing students and strongly supported the students she mentored, teaching them much about working at both a grass roots level with community members and at the highest levels of government. She demonstrated through example how nurses can influence change in policies and programs to improve the health and well being of the people they serve. She not only shared her boundless knowledge with students but also taught them by living the values she promoted: respect, dignity, fairness, integrity, honesty, and caring. She was a tireless advocate for Seniors’ Health and her enthusiasm for her advocacy work was readily transmitted to the students who were fortunate enough to have Geri as a field guide. As an instructor who taught students that she mentored, I couldn’t have asked for a better learning experience for my students that the one they received with Geri. She involved students with critical public health issues that provided essential learning experiences, including supportive housing, falls prevention, and elder abuse. I have no doubt that these experiences shaped these students as nurses in a very positive way.

Geri’s contribution to Senior’s Health at the national level was exemplified in her work with the Federal/Provincial/Territorial Seniors Officals for whom she chaired the Safety and Security Committee. At the provincial level, she was a member of the Seniors Advisory Council of BC where she played a significant and influential role. It was a sad loss for the Ministry of Health when Geri retired – long before she had finished making important contributions. And, retirement did not stop her work. She has continued to sit on provincial and national advisory committees and her advocacy work for seniors has continued unabated. Currently, she is an advisor to a national Pharmacare study being led by Dr. Neena Chappel in the Centre on Aging. more photos

SCHOOL OF NURSING INAUGURAL ALUMNI AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

On November 9, 2006 the School of Nursing presented the inaugural Alumni Award of Excellence to Darlene McGougan.

Carolyn Hammond, Darlene McGougan, Joan GillieThis amazing woman graduated with her BSN in 1998. Of her many accomplishments, Darlene is Manager of Nursing for Aboriginal Health at the Vancouver Island Health Authority and has stayed involved with the School of Nursing by working with students in her practice settings and by inspiring them with her classroom presentations. She has worked on course development, making significant contributions to NURS 325 (Explorations of Nursing Knowledge and Practice) and NURS 484 (Nursing with Aboriginal Peoples in Canada). She is a founding member, and works tirelessly for, the Aboriginal Access Committee, formed in 2001 to facilitate access to the nursing profession for Aboriginal applicants. It is partly through Darlene's efforts and influence that the BSN program and the university will be a more welcoming and culturally safe place for Aboriginal nursing students to experience.

Darlene also represented VIHA in the UVic VPAC sponsored role model video Nursing! The Difference is You which features nurses working in the Coast Salish, Kwakwakawako and Nuuchahnulth Communities on Vancouver Island, to inspire Aboriginal youth to consider a career in nursing. She is also a member of the Learning Circles to Support Aboriginal Nursing, and is very active in the Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada. Darlene upholds the values of social justice and is a truly remarkable example of how UVic alumni make a difference to families, communities, and the wider society. Congratulations Darlene!
