REGISTRATION DEADLINES

To ensure a space in your chosen course(s) please register for BOTH First and Second Terms when you are authorized to register in June/July. Please sign in to check for your individual registration date and time at http://www.uvic.ca Please note that although you register for Second Term courses in June/July, tuition fees for those courses are not due until January 31, 2011.

In order to put into place all the variables necessary for the successful delivery of distance education courses, students should register for courses offered for the First Term (Sept.-Dec.) by August 5, 2011 and Second Term (Jan.–Apr.) by December 2, 2011.

*NEW STUDENTS: If you are a new student entering the program, please register immediately after your $200.00 registration deposit is processed by Accounting Services (1-800-663-5260), even after August 5, 2011 (for September 2011 entrants) or December 2, 2011 (for January 2012 entrants).

COURSE SECTIONS

Given the large number of students registered in the BSN Distance program, we cannot accommodate requests for study group members (online or face-to-face) to be registered in the same course sections.

Please note that to balance course section registration we may move you to another section of the course. Please do not move yourself back to the original section if you have been moved.

ADVISING AND COURSE SEQUENCING

Please contact Lori Klear at klear@uvic.ca or (250) 721-7961 to discuss an initial course plan. Lori can provide answers to any questions about course planning or sequencing or transferring credit(s).

You require 24 units to complete your degree. For program courses see Course Descriptions and Delivery Schedule.

Course sequencing is structured so that course content builds from course to course in a logical way, and so that course pre and co requisites are met and to provide time for the students to contact the Practica Coordinator by the practice course deadline to plan placements (see Preparing for Practice Placements).

SEQUENCE FOR CORE COURES

Complete these courses first:

  • NURS 325 (1.5 units)–Explorations of Nursing Knowledge and Practice
  • NURS 341 (1.5 units)–Professional Practice IV: Nursing Inquiry
  • NURS 345 (3.0 units)–Family Nursing

Next steps:

After completion of NURS 345 there is some flexibility as to when you take NURS 360 and how you combine your practice courses and your nursing electives together. You may wish to complete NURS 360 or a nursing elective prior to commencing NURS 350 and NURS 351, or you may wish to go straight to NURS 350 and NURS 351; either is fine. This is so students can maximize their learning and career aspirations.

NURS 350 and 351 must be taken together; you must contact the Practica Coordinator by the practice course deadline before you register for these courses. (If you have not contacted the Practica Coordinator by the practice course deadlines then you should not enroll in a practice course; instead enroll in NURS 360 and/or the elective courses.)

NURS 360 (1.5 units)–Professional Practice VI: Nursing Research

NURS 430 and 431 must be taken together; you must contact the Practica Coordinator by the practice course deadline before you register for these courses.

NURS 495 (1.5–4.5 units)–Nursing Practice Synthesis (1.5 units=78 hours, 3.0 units=156 hours, 4.5 units=234 hours). You must contact the Practica Coordinator by the practice course deadline before you register for this course.

Students complete 3, 4 or 5 nursing electives in the program (or are assessed nursing elective transfer credit from previously-taken approved academic nursing courses, up to a maximum of 3 units). Students complete NURS 495: Nursing Practice Synthesis using various hour and credit options (78 hr=1.5 units, 156 hr=3.0 units and 234 hr=4.5 units) depending on transfer credits and chosen electives.

NURS 495 is the final program course. All other courses must be completed prior to enrolling in NURS 495. Collectively these courses are the theory base that shapes the focus students choose for NURS 495.

REQUIRED NURSING ELECTIVES (4.5–7.5 units)

Be strategic when planning these electives throughout the program, particularly in relation to your practica choices for NURS 351, NURS 431 and NURS 495. You may take your nursing electives any time in the program after NURS 325. Taking an elective course prior to a practicum may be a good idea if the content is related to the work focus of your requested practicum placement.

You have the following combinations to choose from to complete the required 24 units:

  • Complete five nursing electives if you choose 1.5 units of NURS 495
  • Complete four nursing electives if you choose 3.0 units of NURS 495
  • Complete three nursing electives if you choose 4.5 units of NURS 495

NURS 425 for potential graduate students:

If you are considering applying to graduate school upon completion of your BSN, you should take NURS 425: Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis as this is strongly recommended for admission to all UVic School of Nursing graduate programs. NURS 425 may apply as either a nursing or non-nursing elective in the BSN program.

REQUIRED NON-NURSING ELECTIVE (1.5 units)

A university 100 level course or above in a discipline other then nursing or transferred credit, may be taken at any point in the program to meet this requirement. Please have non-nursing elective choices approved by the Student Advisor as a Letter of Permission will be required.

PREPARING FOR PRACTICE PLACEMENTS

Please contact Linda Latham, Distance Education Practica Coordinator at lmlatham@uvic.ca or (250) 721-6523 to arrange your practice placement.

Placement requests must be submitted to the Practica Coordinator by: March 1 for the Sept. term; June 1 for the Jan. term and Nov. 1 for the May term. The Practice Placement Checklist needs to be completed and current for each practice course.

ARRANGING A PRACTICE PLACEMENT

Placement requests must be submitted to the Practica Coordinator as indicated on the Practice Placement Checklist, so agencies have time to select a staff member as a field guide, plan for their role in student learning, and enter into an insurance agreement with the University.

All placement requests outside of your paid work setting requires a Student Profile sent in an electronic file to the Practica Coordinator. Those students completing practica in their place of work during paid work hours must complete an Option 3 Agreement form and fax (250) 721-6231, scan or mail to the School of Nursing. Practice Placement forms are available on the School of Nursing website at http://nursing.uvic.ca/distance/index.php

The practice courses that require arranging by the Practica Coordinator are:

  • NURS 351: Nursing Practice VI: Promoting Health of Community and Society requires 78 practice hours
  • NURS 431: Nursing Practice VII: Engaging in Leadership requires 78 practice hours
  • NURS 495: Nursing Practice Synthesis requires 78, 156 or 234 practice hours depending on the units taken

SIX YEAR TIME LIMIT (POST DIPLOMA)

The Post RN Diploma BSN program must normally be completed within six years.

If you are nearing your six year time limit, or unable to register in more than one term for any reason, it is essential that you contact the student advisor for course planning.

COURSE MATERIALS

Most courses have required texts, which are available through the UVic Bookstore. Course content including: syllabus, assignments, learning activities etc. will be available on the course websites.

Online ordering of textbooks will be available from the Bookstore at http://www.uvicbookstore.ca/ Course materials for Fall Session courses will be available after August 1, 2011.

UNIVERSITY CALENDAR

The UVic Calendar is available at http://web.uvic.ca/calendar/

ACCOUNTING INFORMATION

The University of Victoria, Accounting Services does not provide distance students with a statement of fees owing until the fees are overdue (accruing interest). Overdue fees (including fines) block registration in the next session.

Please view your account by signing in to UVic at http://www.uvic.ca/current to confirm your course registration and tuition balance. Students may pay fees using the Internet banking site from the Student Account Balance or Student Account Detail screens. To pay via Internet banking, set the payee up as University of Victoria-Tuition Fees, then enter your student number as your account number.

ENGLISH REQUIREMENT

Students who do not meet the University of Victoria English requirement on admission to the program are strongly advised to register in an approved English course during their first or second term of study. Early completion of the English requirement will facilitate writing your academic papers.

Completion of an approved English course will satisfy the non-nursing elective requirement in the program if needed.

If you are unable to take ENGL 115 online through UVic there are distance course options available to you, but these courses will be considered transfer credit if you need the English course for your non-nursing elective. In this case, the transfer credit of 1.5 units will apply to the total allowable program transfer credit of 3.0 units.

To take an English course outside of UVic, please identify yourself as a UVic nursing student and remember to request a letter of permission from School of Nursing at (250) 472-4315 or (250) 472-4361 by email nursing@uvic.ca

No LPI or English placement examination is necessary to take one of the English courses below—please register directly in the course after obtaining your Letter of Permission.

EMPLOYMENT/ACADEMIC REFERENCES FOR DISTANCE EDUCATION GRADUATES

Please give some thought to your future needs for references for either employment or graduate school. Students who have recently completed their entire program by Distance Education have encountered the situation where they did not know any of the present faculty and cannot obtain a reference. Unfortunately, we do not keep records after a student’s graduation except for the grades that appear on the transcripts. We would like to suggest the following:

  • Establish a relationship with a professor, indicating that you would like her/him to provide a reference in the future.
  • Keeps a dossier including your practice appraisal forms from all practice courses with relevant materials that may help a professor write a reference for you some time in the future (perhaps 5–10 years from now). That dossier may include papers that you have written, a CV outlining your accomplishments, grades, a draft of a letter of reference, etc.
  • If you encounter difficulty contacting a faculty member, please contact the School of Nursing at (250) 721-7955.
