All students studying in the Post RN BSN Program should contact Lori Klear in either their first or second term of studies at UVic in order to develop a course schedule to facilitate progression through the program, or to have any questions answered regarding transfer credit, electives, etc. Joan will also assist in finding answers to questions about courses or curricula, or if a student requires guidance in planning or registering for courses
Please note that if you have specific questions regarding transfer credit or previous UVic course work completed outside of BSN program requirements that may be used as non-nursing elective credit in the BSN program, it is your responsibility to contact Lori Klear to ensure that the course chosen by advisors to fulfill BSN program requirements are acceptable to you. If you have plans to complete a second degree at UVic in another discipline, concurrently, or in future, or to complete a graduate degree, this is particularly important.
Course Sequencing
You must take NURS 325, NURS 341 and NURS 345 prior to commencing practicum courses (NURS 351, NURS 431 and NURS 495). Students begin with introductory theory courses, Explorations of Nursing Knowledge and Practice (NURS 325), Nursing Inquiry (NURS 341) and Family Nursing (NURS 345). For Family Nursing (NURS 345) students visit a self selected family in their community four times during the course.
Course sequencing is structured so that course content builds from course to course in a logical way, and so that course pre and co requisites are met. After completion of NURS 345 there is some flexibility as to when you take NURS 360 and how you combine your practice courses and your nursing electives together. You may wish to complete NURS 360 or a nursing elective prior to commencing NURS 350 and NURS 351, or you may wish to go straight to NURS 351 and NURS 351; either is fine. This is so that students can maximize their learning and career aspirations.
You require 24 credits to complete your degree. Core program courses are offered every term, 3 terms per year (Sept-Dec, Jan-April, May-Aug).
Students complete 3, 4 or 5 nursing electives in the program (or are assessed nursing elective transfer credit from previously-taken approved academic nursing courses, up to a maximum of 3 units). Nursing electives are usually offered once per year but may occur more often; please check the Course Delivery Schedule . The number of electives required to reach 24 credits will depend on the number of approved transfer credits and the credits/units selected for the final practicum, NURS 495 Nursing Practice Synthesis (see also below). NURS 495 is the final course in the program. All other courses must be completed prior to enrolling in N 495 Nursing Practice Synthesis. Collectively these courses are the theory base that shapes the focus students choose for NURS 495.
REQUIRED CORE COURSES
NURS 325 (1.5 units)–Explorations of Nursing Knowledge and Practice
NURS 341 (1.5 units)–Professional Practice IV: Nursing Inquiry (Formerly Professional Growth III: Nursing Inquiry)
NURS 345 (3.0 units)–Family Nursing
NURS 350 (1.5 units)–Health and Healing VII: Promoting Community and Societal Health (Formerly Health IV: Health Promotion and Community Empowerment) (must be taken with NURS 351)
NURS 351 (1.5 units)–Nursing Practice VI (must be taken with NURS 350)
NURS 350 and 351 must be taken together; you must contact the practica coordinator 6 months before you intend to register for these courses.
NURS 360 (1.5 units)–Professional Practice VI: Nursing Research (1.5 units)–Professional Practice VI: Nursing Research (Formerly Professional Growth IV: Research)
NURS 430 (1.5 units)–Professional Growth V: Leadership in Nursing (Formerly Professional Growth V: Nurses Influencing Change) (must be taken with NURS 431)
NURS 431 (1.5 units)–Nursing Practice VII: Engaging in Leadership (must be taken with NURS 430)
NURS 430 and 431 must be taken together; you must contact the practica coordinator 6 months before you intend to register for these courses.
NURS 495 (1.5–4.5 units)–Nursing Practice Synthesis (1.5 units=78 hours, 3.0 units=156 hours, 4.5 units=234 hours).
NURS 495 may be taken in different terms to a maximum of 4.5 units. See Required Nursing Electives (below) to determine NURS 495 units.
REQUIRED NURSING ELECTIVES
(4.5–7.5 units)
Be strategic when planning these electives throughout the program, particularly in relation to your practica choices for NURS 351, NURS 431 and NURS 495. You may take your nursing electives any time in the program after NURS 325. Taking an elective course prior to a practicum may be a good idea if the content is related to the work focus of your requested practicum placement.
You have the following combinations to choose from:
Complete five nursing electives if you choose 1.5 units of NURS 495
Complete four nursing electives if you choose 3.0 units of NURS 495
Complete three nursing electives if you choose 4.5 units of NURS 495
NURS 425 (1.5 units) Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis
NURS 450 (1.5 units) Nursing Management
NURS 481C (1.5 units) Nursing Practice in Hospice Palliative Care

NURS 493A (1.5 units) Community Health Nursing
NURS 493C (1.5 units) Lived Experience on Health in Aging
REQUIRED NON-NURSING ELECTIVE
(1.5 units)
A university 100 level course or above outside of the nursing program, or transferred credit, may be taken at any point in the program to meet this requirement. Please have non‐nursing elective choices approved by the student advisor as a Letter of Permission will be required.
