Additional required readings are accessed through E-Reserve on the UVic Library website. Many courses also have textbooks, and/or CDs or DVDs as additional required course components.

You are responsible to return the order forms, with payment, to the Bookstore either by fax or by mail or you can order online at http://www.uvicbookstore.ca/.

You are required to purchase the current edition of the course manual published for the term in which you are registered.

Online Communication

The curriculum of the CAEN Program is defined as the interactions that take place between and among students, clients, practitioners and teachers with the intent that learning take place. Therefore, the quality of the curriculum depends on the quality of these interactions and students, practitioners, and faculty are equally valued as partners in the learning process.

To facilitate these interactions, the School of Nursing uses Blackboard Learning Systems, a user-friendly web based collection of tools designed to facilitate learning over the internet. Students are expected to engage in online learning activities throughout each course. Many courses include online group work as a required activity.

To participate in online discussion and assignments, and to access course information, e.g., assignment due dates, you will need to sign on to the course website. You access a course website as you would a regular website.

To use Blackboard you need access to a computer with:

    • A reliable connection to the Internet.
    • A UVic NetLink-ID. (If you do not have a NetLink
    • A recommended web browser, configured correctly (see Browser Checker tests".)

The following web browsers are recommended for use with Blackboard.

For PCs:

  • Firefox: versions 1.5, 2.0
  • Mozilla: version 1.7x
  • Netscape: version 7.2

For Macs:

  • Mozilla: version 1.7 (OS X only)
  • Firefox: version 1.0 (OS X only)

You must apply for the NetLink ID and UVic email address as soon as you have registered in your first course so that you will be able to begin your course on time. Follow the instructions outlined here: Getting UVic NetLink & Email Accounts

Course Instructor

Contact information about your instructor will be found on the course websites. Your instructor is available to support your learning in a variety of ways:

    • during scheduled weekly telephone office hours
    • in online discussion forums and via Blackboard mail
    • through feedback on your course assignments and journal submissions

You are encouraged to contact your instructor at any time during the course, particularly if you need to clarify course content that is not understood or you are concerned about your progress

Learner Support

Adult learners often have concerns about returning to complete further education. However, because mature students are motivated to learn, they are usually successful in their studies. Most students gain increasing confidence in their academic abilities as they proceed through the program. Here are some helpful supports for you to consider and access as you start your program.

Study Groups

Students have found study groups to be a great source of moral support and a way to improve learning. Students have traditionally formed face-to-face groups. With the advances in technology, they are now forming support groups online as well. Study groups are often a good resource for sharing experiences in navigating the system, and meeting the challenges of returning to school. A study group can be a good place to discuss and process new and different ways of viewing nursing and health care.
