Overview

The Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) degree, offered by the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria is a practice-oriented, theory-based degree intended to prepare nurses for licensure and advanced practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Graduates of the program will be leaders in health care, engaging in advanced practice and primary health care for clients for clients across the lifespan. The program is accredited by the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia and graduates are eligible for registration upon graduation.

Please note all applicants to the NP option must be a resident in British Columbia and should remain so for the duration of the program. Applicants must also be licensed with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC) and have a minimum of two years of relevant practice experience.

This is a full-time two year intensive program. Continuous registration in three terms per year is necessary in order to meet graduation requirements to be eligible to write CRNBC exam and the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE).

Course Requirements

Students are required to complete 24 units of study, including a mandatory onsite orientation prior to program commencement in September (usually four days in length) and five additional condensed on-site components during each practice term.

Program Goals

To facilitate the development of nurses who:

  • Have advanced knowledge, skill, and expertise to meet the Primary Health Care (PHC) needs of individuals and families across the lifespan and within the context of community
  • Collaborate effectively with individuals, families, communities, and other health and social service professionals, to ensure high quality, comprehensive, holistic PHC
  • Identify and implement research based innovations that improve client care and functions of organizations and/or systems
  • Understand legislative and socio-political issues that influence health policy and build strategies to improve health health-care access and healthy public policy (CNA, 2008)
  • Enact the CRNBC Competencies Required of Nurse Practitioners in BC as applied to the family stream in a variety of primary health care contexts
  • Practice within the Scope of Practice of Nurse Practitioners – Standards, Limits and Conditions family stream

Recommended Pre-Admission Criteria

  • Recent basic ECG Interpretation course
  • Recent completion (within five years) of an anatomy and physiology course
  • Recent completion (within five years) of a physical assessment course

Short-listed applicants are required to participate in an interview with a member of the Selection Committee.

Program Delivery (Distance Education)

The NP option is delivered through a variety of distance learning formats; primarily by web-based asynchronous learning and intensive onsites (usually 4 to 5 days in length) once each term (except for the first term of study). There is a mandatory onsite orientation in Victoria at the beginning of the program and some synchronous sessions are held to increase interaction among faculty and this diverse group of learners. This option is available to students residing in British Columbia only.
