Overview

The Nurse Practitioner option prepares nurses to become family nurse practitioners in primary care settings-assessing, diagnosing and treating common ailments for clients of all ages. Practice experiences must be completed in British Columbia. Graduates are eligible to write the examinations leading to CRNBC registration as a Nurse Practitioner (Family) in BC.

Preference is given to full time applicants. Continuous registration in three terms per year is highly recommended as students must complete program requirements within five years of admission to a program.

Course Requirements

Students are expected to complete 30.5units of study, including an onsite program orientation prior to program commencement in September (usually three days in length) and five additional condensed on-site components and a 200 hour (4.5 unit internship)

NP Program Delivery

The School of Nursing has developed, over the past 30 years, a strong reputation in Nursing for our Distance Post RN Diploma BSN Program. We build on this reputation within our ANP Graduate Programs.

Development of courses for the NP program option fulfills our commitment to deliver graduate education to nurses through flexible, accessible learning modes. Methods for program delivery include a media based format involving print, DVDs, live web-based classrooms, interactive course websites and onsite course components.

NP students are required to complete 30.5 units of study which include

  • three days of on-campus orientation at the start of the program
  • online nursing courses throughout the program
  • four on-campus intensive lab sessions (4 days each)
  • 800 hours of direct care in primary care clinical settings under the guidance of a registered NP or physician preceptor.
