The many inspirational successes of Victoria’s community leaders were celebrated today at the seventh annual VLA reception and ceremony at the Fairmont Empress hotel. Led by Leadership Victoria, the VLA awards are a partnership between Leadership Victoria, the University of Victoria, the Rotary Clubs of Greater Victoria, and the Victoria Foundation to recognize outstanding contributions to the vibrancy of our community.

Educating and Supporting Clinical Nurse Specialists in British Columbia

The Canadian Institute of Health Research sponsored a knowledge sharing and creation meeting May 31st 2010 in Vancouver BC to address supporting and educating Clinical Nurse Specialists in the province. The meeting was organized by faculty from the School of Nursing, University of Victoria (Joan MacNeil and Karen MacKinnon) working in collaboration with the newly formed Clinical Nurse Specialist Association of BC (CNSABC).

The meeting was attended by Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs), graduate nursing students, health authority nurse leaders and faculty who teach in nursing education programs that prepare CNSs. The objectives of the meeting included:

  • Building partnerships between Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Leaders and Nurse Educators to co-create knowledge that incorporates current research evidence about supporting and educating Clinical Nurse Specialists;
  • Synthesizing research findings from several studies to develop a strategic plan regarding strategies that support the Clinical Nurse Specialists’ role in improving patient care;
  • Examining how the Clinical Nurse Specialist role is changing in the province to ensure that our education programs meet future needs; and
  • And identifying potential areas for future research that would support Clinical Nurse Specialists (including their educational preparation) in the future.
